It’s extremely exciting to know that there’s not just a new Star Trek game coming in fairly short order but one that seems to hold true to the tenants of what makes the franchise so impactful and relevant to this day. That’s extremely exciting as while an interactive visual-novel style game would have been pretty fun, the fact that we can actually walk around and explore both the starship and alien worlds is a Trekkie’s dream come true, and sadly one that is rarely done in video game form. What exactly was the state of the Alpha Quadrant post-Dominion War is a question that has so far only been explored in beta-canon via novels and comics so, actually being able to see firsthand the events of this tumultuous time for the Federation is something that I’m really looking forward to.īeyond the story though, developers Dramatic Labs have promised that Star Trek: Resurgence will be a totally self-contained adventure that won’t be released in episodic chunks like previous Telltale games and that players can look forward to third-person ‘action/exploration’ elements.

STAR TREK RESURGENCE XBOX SERIES
The game is said to take place immediately following the TNG-era movies, so in a time before the events of the recent series Lower Decks and Picard and of course the universe-shattering Romulan supernova. Now while deciding the fate of your own Star Trek crew and adventure is a major reason why I’m hyped for Resurgence, the fact that it looks to actually explore a period of Star Trek canon that still has many questions left unanswered is a really big draw here. And that’s exactly what the older Telltale games were famous for, moving along a narrative based on your decisions and I think applying that to Star Trek is a match made in the Celestial Temple. Sometimes it’s with a phaser set to kill and other times it’s with diplomacy and patience, but it’s this exploration of how our humanity can be tested that makes the franchise so good. Sure, big space battles and nefarious villains are definitely part of the show but there’s so much more to Trek than that and it looks like Resurgence understands that.Īnyone who has watched any of the nearly dozen Star Trek franchises will know that what makes the series so great is how it poses moral conundrums to the characters and explores how they might be handled.

Essentially none of them feel like they truly encompass everything that makes up the greater Star Trek universe. Now I don’t mean to say there hasn’t ever been a good Star Trek video game, there are plenty of fun games to play set in the Star Trek universe, however, how many of them can truly say they feel like Star Trek game? Games like Star Trek: Armada, Elite Force, and Bridge Commander are fine experiences but could ostensibly be set on any other sci-fi property and be just as good. Today, we might be able to finally put that argument to rest. A few years ago, we asked why couldn’t anyone make a good Star Trek game. Being able to be the decision-maker aboard a Federation starship is something that fans of Star Trek and video games have wanted for a very long time. The reveal that Epic Games was partnering with Dramatic Labs, a studio made up of former Telltale veterans to create a game set in the Star Trek universe was enough to get Trekkies (like yours truly) excited. Lost in the pomp and glamor of the Game Awards’ 2021 edition was the reveal of a certain game set in a galaxy… well close by.
